Two soldiers form an unlikely friendship during the Iraq war Kevin, a fervent optimist, and Mark, a cynical pseudo-philosopher. When they are captured, their time as POWs tests every instinct for survival, but only one comes home. Although he is maimed physically and emotionally, he is discharged under Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell. Steeped in nihilistic anger, he makes an unstable return to civilian life.
The aftermath of their captivity exposes the tragic secrets of these two soldiers’ lives, contentiously intertwined with both sides of American politics, Christian faith, and the struggle for gay rights. Remnants of Light uses the debate and repeal of the DADT policy to illuminate the moral, ethical, and emotional quandaries of its characters—and modern America.

I truly felt every emotion reading this novel! One moment I am tearing up, and other times literally laughing! Just a heads-up though, there were a few moments I cringed; however only because the author writes the 'reality' so well and detailed. It is one book that draws you in, without question. I would highly recommend this novel to everyone. You don't have to be an avid reader, or have a stance on DADT or religion. It's just plain talented writing. But if you don't have a stance on either issue, I am certain that you will be questioning your viewpoint after reading Remnants of Light. So impressed, well done Mr. Yost! I cannot wait to see more work from you...

Remnants of Light edition by Mike Yost Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews
This was truly a great book. The vivid imagery shows you everything in the world of the story, and the passion of the words helps you easily connect with the characters as if you know them personally. I am not an avid reader, but I could not put this one down. Definitely a must read.
This book is firmly rooted in the ugly reality of life. There is no sweet, feel good ending found here. While this is a work of fiction, it feels gritty, raw, and oh so real! It takes real talent to make readers feel this engrossed in works of fiction. Mark is the antihero you want to get close to but you know his mercurial character repels you. I highly recommend this book to all. I was surprised by how much I enjoyed reading it as it is not normally something I am drawn to. While the book focuses on the issues of gays in the military and religion, it is much more than that. This book will stay with you long after you turn the last page.
Powerful! As a retired AF officer, I never agreed with DADT, it forced gays to lie. But this book really puts the spotlight on what wass wrong with the policy. It also sheds a light on the PTSD issue that is ignored by many. Civilians need a better understanding of what our military goes through, and this is a great book for that. You certainly don't have to be gay to feel it's power!
